When I start working with a new customer, I like to find out key information to better understand their needs and make appropriate recommendations. Usually I begin by asking how long they have been living in their home. This helps me determine if what I am seeing is a result of their landscaping efforts, or if they recently inherited plantings from a previous owner. There can sometimes be grading and drainage problems that need to be addressed before making improvements to the overall appearance of the property. Next I need to know if they have public water and sewer, or onsite well and septic; as well as an irrigation system, dog fence, landscape lighting or buried obstacles for which we should be made aware. This is all very important information that needs to be acknowledged before even starting to consider my favorite part, which is the aesthetic appearance and functionality of the outdoor living space.
Finally with all of these facts noted, I begin to think about what impact Mother Nature has on our area sunlight, wind, soil conditions and wildlife all play a part when considering landscaping.
